Hi all,
me and my wife are looking at moving, to a new build, we live in a period house 1900 and it never ending with the renovations and don’t seem to be getting anywhere!!! so fed up of it so looking to move
My commute from my current home is 10-15min 4.8miles one way,
The new house would be 30min 16miles one way
eventually be boing the new commute on a cheep motorcycle, as this house will have some where to park it
So my question is would you move further away or not?
I know people do longer commutes but this will be the longest commute iv ever done, i earn proximately 21-26k with over time.
Thanks for your time

The time and distance aren't excessive, but will you be able to get to work by public transport if your own is off the road for any reason? It's certainly a factor worth considering.0

How are the roads? Do you have an alternative route if the main road is closed due to an accident?
I ask because I used to have a 10 minute, 4 mile commute, and moved jobs to a 20 minute 30 mile commute which I thought wasn't too big a deal. In the event, it was a pain in the butt. I had loads of options for the shorter commute, different routes, etc as it was in town. There was only one main road for the longer commute (a main A road), the only alternatives being windy country roads including some single lane sections. It seemed that nearly weekly there were long queues due to an accident and then every few months, there'd be road works with temporary traffic lights making the journey more like an hour. I soon gave it up and moved to yet another different town, but in a different direction with better roads.0 -
Only you can answer that as you'll need to assess the additional recurring costs for a longer commute.
Every job in the last 10 years has included at least a 45 minute commute and I've never had an issue with it. I'd just think longer term if the house you're moving to is close to general employment (ie, it's not in the middle of nowhere except your current job!).Know what you don't0 -
Whatever you decide, make sure you do the route, both ways, during rush hour (or your usual start/finish times) before making any decisions. Only then will you know what it could be like. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0

Also worth considering is how flexible, or otherwise, your employer will be if you arrive late. Some jobs it hardly matters providing you make the time up but others, perhaps where clients would be kept waiting, it is very important.
So, if it matters to your employer, is your responsibility to arrive on time and they do not have to allow any flexibility for traffic, weather etc. Obviously the further away you live the more chance there is of problems.
Finally, if you ever take leave in half days remember that the travel remains the same for less work.0 -
motorcycles are immune from any traffic delays....
I also think you will improve on your 30 minute journey.0 -
Often it's not the length of commute which is the problem but the unpredictability of it. A commute which is a reliable 60 mins can be easier to cope with than one which is 45 mins one day and 2 hours the next.0

I currently live about the same distance from you to where I work.
When I buy a place this year it will be about 30 miles away and an hour on the train or bus. Not because I can't afford to buy where I am but I will have the opportunity of getting a house / bungalow instead of a flat.
You need to weigh up the pros and cons.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -
I used to commute 25 miles which usually took 45 minutes, but on a bad traffic day could be 1hr 15. The thing which meant it wasn't awful was that there were about 5 different sensible routes to make the journey on, so usually you could choose a different route if your usual one was clogged. That said, 30 minutes is not that long - if it is consistently only 30 minutes.0

Motorbike and a 2.5mile commute to work. Worked a treat.
Then briefly used it for a 15 mile each way commute which took around 1h in total.
The single biggest problem for me was the weather. Period. It even trumps the time I broke down AT WORK and had to do a 15mile trip AFTER emergency repairs. Try doing a 15 mile trip on two wheels at about 8am when the roads are as icy as they are in parts of the UK now, when even 3 layers of clothes can't arrest the cold. When you are so cold that, even in a warm building, you stay cold ALL DAY.
My single piece of advice would be to move to somewhere which has good public transport links as well. A nearby bus or train which is manageable if your motorbike idea doesn't seem wise on a particular day. Or consider using a car instead.
Biggest positive is that, generally, motorbikes don't suffer as much with congestion etc (as long as you filter).0
