Gas hob - plug to hardwired

Hi all

We're replacing a hob in our kitchen, new one has to be hard wired, just found the wiring for the existing one and it is a plug in one. Can we add a plug to the new hob, or how difficult is it to change to hardwired? Will we need an electrician or could our gas plumber who is installing the hob do it?

Thanks

  • Going on everything you've said, it should be fine to put a plug on it. Let us know the make/model just to be on the safe side though.

No no if a hob needs a plug it will come with a moulded one fitted. Give us the make and model and pref the rating in Kw or W on the sticker on the underside of the appliance.

Well the OP states this is a gas hob so I presume the electrical connection is purely for the igniter. If correct whatever method is used the hob should be protected by a low value fuse not the normal 40 amp ish cooker supply.

Some gas hobs do come without a plug. The power required for the igniter is minimal. So fitting plug with 3amp plug would be Ok.

Suspect the hob wires where meant to fit into fixed wiring via a double pole switched fused spur outlet with a fuse rating of 3amps.

As others have said post make model number and any ratings found on hob.

Surprised instruction manual does not have installation instructions?

It's this one, Hoover. It's a gas hob so the connection is purely for the ignition.

    Thanks

Probably does, question is asked by the householder called Kate,if she asks her GAS SAFE installer they will read the instructions and install it correctly or get a registered electrician to do it.

Yes, hence the question in my OP where I asked if our GAS SAFE plumber would be able to do the electrical bit or if we need to get an electrician in. I would have asked the plumber but he's away at the moment.

Plumbers have to be good at electrics too nowadays so it shouldn't be a problem.

Having said that I had a plumber change a pump & he just cut through the mains lead while it was on, relying on the circuit breaker to save him from a shock.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION: This product requires professional installation to a 3 Amp fused spur by a qualified installer, such as one of our Team Knowhow experts

Overkill to say the least and a blatant attempt to sell installation.
This would be perfectly fine to fit a plug with a 3 amp fuse on.
