if the car has a very high biting point and it only takes a slight press to disengage the clutch then driving with your foot on the clutch pedal could easily be the cause of the burning smell

Well ! A 65 plate car is expected to tolerate a bit of abuse ? Is it a big ask?

Manual cars are designed to be driven by people who actually know how to use a clutch. They are obviously not going to over engineer a clutch just incise someone who can't drive properly is using the car :rotfl:
  • You quite often get that with learners that they over rev the engine in first because they can't actually change gear while steering as they are too busy trying to do the feed the wheel properly through their hands. Usually experienced drivers just spin the wheel with one hand while changing gear with the other so any over revving is deliberate.

The car that i currently own don't have this problem (Nissan Qashqai)
I bought this car and expect it to give me fewer problems in its life time.
If it is a latent problem which is going to escalate at a later point of time when I lose all my claiming rights, then I have to rectify it with the seller. I expected the clutch to withstand a bit of abuse, perhaps the owner of the car has already used it to a level that it is in ICU.
    Am i being unfair?

If you're riding the clutch whilst driving? Yes you are being unfair.

Absolutely, if you're riding the clutch and conscious of it then it's all on you.

If someone else drives the car with you in the passenger seat, does this occur?
    If not, it's totally you.

    Its tolerating it just fine.
You are simply shortening the life of the clutch.
Could be a brand new car or an old banger. Same result
