Help! Please! I think I just lost all my holiday photos...

I have an OrangeT-1 phone, and a crummy old HP Dell computer nearly 10 years old (which won't even download audio files to MP3 players, a supreme mark of crumminess, according to my dd, but that's a different issue...)

I plugged in the phone to the USB port and selected the Mass storage option, which meant that the phone sent all my photos to the computer and removed them from my phone (i suppose - can't see them there any more, anyhow), I then unplugged the phone from the computer using the hotplug icon. I don't know what I did wrong but a warning notice came up saying I hadn't stopped the external device before unplugging (not sure what there was to stop? Should I have closed the Explore windows which showed the photos?) and therefore I might have crashed the external drive.
When I looked in Windows Explore for the F drive afterwards, it wasn't there!!@*&""!

Assuming I have in fact crashed the Fdrive, is there any way of recovering my precious photos, please? Would a computer shop be able to help?
