Moving gas & electricity to new home

Hoping i can get some advice. Currently with British Gas for dual fuel, fixed term ends on 31st Jan. Will be moving home in the second week of February. New home currently has First Utility.
When I called British Gas, they explained I can carry across my standard tariff to new home and then take out a new fixed tariff, but the current First Utility smart meters are very difficult for them to work with, so would need to send send round an emergency engineer after we move in to replace the meters.
Is it best to do this or to close my current account with British Gas and then open a temporary account with First Utility? I just want to do what's easiest for now and then plan to shop around and switch once we've moved in.
Thanks!

You can't do this. You must close the contract at your present house - read the meters when you move and give them to BG.

Yes read your new property meters and get set up with FU . Then swop suppliers.
and yes the FU meters will no longer be Smart and you need to read them regularly.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I like the way they say you can "carry across" your standard tariff, like they're doing you a favour, instead of exactly what would happen anyway in closing your old account and opening a new one at the new property.
You'll need to set up a temporary account with First Utility anyway, because even if you initiated a switch to British Gas, the switching process isn't instant so you'll owe them for a bit. So you might as well take the opportunity to shop around and find the best deal. If that happens to be British Gas, fair enough, but you haven't lost anything by closing your old account and opening a new one.0
