What's the common way of notification?

When I was a mega comped back in 2010/2011 the most common way I would find out I had won something was a prize simply turning up...no email, no call just a prize with a slip in it....
I had maybe one phone call and a couple of emails, direct messages etc but just turning up was standard.
I've tried to get back into comping a few times since then but as we all know it's become increasingly popular and one starts to lose heart and think why am I doing this for hours every day....I do enjoy it but it's easy to get disheartened isn't it? Anyway, I digress.....
To those who comp a lot and still win, is the random turn up still the most common way of finding out you've won something or has it changed?
