Hi All,
Had a problem this week; Bought a laptop on Ebay using my Barclaycard Credit Card -
I received a text from Paypal marking the transaction as suspicious and did I authorize it, I responded yes.
The transaction has then gone through on my Capital One Credit Card instead pushing me over and generating a £12 Fee  - The Barclaycard statement is showing a transaction for Paypal for £0.
I had just manually added the Barclaycard to Paypal and doublechecked that I had the right card when checking out of ebay.
I can only guess that Barclaycard declined the transaction and then Paypal used another card on my account.
I did not receive a text from Barclaycard about the transaction and the text from Paypal did not give any card numbers or choices other then to answer yes I made a purchase for x£'s
Has anybody any experience with this - I am on a creditbuilder account with Capital One and the Same for Barclaycard a Barclaycard Credit builder/Initial credit card.
Many Thanks

I am really sorry you have had this problem a bit late I know but one piece of advice I can give you is never to pay for any high value item using PayPal if you buy a laptop on eBay if possible use your credit card Direct as you then have section 75 protection and avoid all the PayPal traps0

I have a capital one card. They email me if I go over my limit, but if I pay that day to bring me within limit I am not charged a fee0

It’s really not a good idea to be so close to your limits, especially on credit builder cards the APRs are expensive! Leave a bit of a buffer and it you get problems at least you won’t go over limit and damage your credit files more.0

Thankyou Fiona CW I received the text today that I had gone over the first idea that Capital One was involved in my purchase in any way and they applied the Fee yesterday according to the online statement! - 18CC good advise I get a bit muddled on ebay sometimes, I should have just entered the Barclaycard (As it is a credit card) at checkout, I think it's Visa Cards that don't have protection so Paypal is preferable?
A4445 Wasn't close to my limit - Below Half. Needed a new laptop and put it on Barclaycard but there was a problem with the Payment and Paypal took the money from Capital One Card which was on my account in the Cards Section, I triple-checked and definitely selected the Barclaycard at checkout!0 -

That’s a fair point I’d complain to PayPal!0 -
Hi I think both MasterCard and visa have section 75 protection you should just have entered your credit card at check out and then as long as it was over £100 you would have had full protection PayPal is a bit wild west in my humble opinion0

Update - Capital One Refunded £12 as a good will gesture and asked me to make a payment to get my account upto date ASAP - Used online secure message feature took about 2 hours to get a reply. Result!
Paypal havn't responded yet, going to delete all my cards off Paypal to make sure I don't get in this mess again.
Now I'm just left with a large balance on my Capital One, going to look if I can do a balance transfer to the Barclaycard, should have been on the Barclaycard from the start which has a better rate and a much higher limit.
Thanks for all you're help, was absolutely gutted when I discovered this today, have worked very hard to get my bad credit solvent again.
I will definitely be following up a complaint with Paypal about this and maybe ebay too, It's not right to pick a card on checkout and then be charged on another.0 -
Indeed 18cc lesson learned will do that in future, thankyou.0

Glad you have got it well sort of sorted and thanks for your kind remarks regards 18 CC0

With Paypal you can set up a main funding option and a backup.
If the first funding option fails (declined) then it automatically tries the backup funding option which seems to have happened with yourself. It would be something you set up when adding multiple payment options.
The best way to avoid this if you dont want it would be just to leave your main preferred payment option and delete the rest.0
