Car tax

Trying to renew my car tax. In the light of legislation stating that there should be no charge levied for the use of a credit card, how can the government do so when you want to pay for car tax by CC?
Is the government breaking their own law?

Are you using a business credit card? If so, they are still allowed to charge a fee. There should be no fee applied if you are using a personal credit card.

I bought car tax last week online and did not get charged a fee - are you using a corporate card?

If the site charges for any card use, it's fine, it's only if they charge just for CC that it's not.

Just pay by direct debit and avoids any risk

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Don't DDs incur paying more than the bi-annual/annual single fee when taken over the six or twelve months ?

The OP wants to avoid paying more as I read it.

Yes - but if you're paying it in one go then there is no surcharge

Only non-personal CCs should be charged the £2.50 fee. Wasn't that clearly stated on the DVLA site when I paid our VED in December so I paid by Debit card.

Could have got a good few pence cashback if I'd known and used my CC.

Paid mine on line and no fee for using cc.

Which is what I was saying - in response to the previous message which was advocating paying by DD, in which case there is a surcharge.

Also, there is an extra amount payable pro rata if you only pay six months in a one off, rather than the twelve month option.

No, there is no surcharge for paying annually (aka 'in one go') by DD, which (I believe) is what !!! was referring to....
