DRO and accidental payment on closed account - could I get this back?
A bit more complicated than the title suggests...
As I'm unemployed/disabled and only getting ESA-WRAG I can't afford to pay my electricity bill as they simply got too high. Things like prepayment meters, payment plans, and fuel direct are not options in my situation so the only option was to deal with this via a Debt Relief Order.
The amount stated in the Debt Relief Order was based on an assumption of consumption in order to cover a quarterly bill, thus looking at my electricity account now I'm around £200+ in credit - this account was closed, I've now moved to a cheaper electricity supplier.
I've had a payment set-up on my bank account for a while now, to go out automatically to my electricity supplier as soon as I get paid, and it seems I forgot to cancel this standing order so £20 has gone to my old electricity supplier when I didn't have to pay it at all due to the DRO.
1. Can I get this £20 back?
Yes I owe it but the DRO covered what I owed, that £20 is a lot to misplace like this...especially as my first bill for my new energy company has come through and is high as I was unable to give them a meter reading, that £20 should have been going to them to pay that bill instead.
2. What happens to that £200+ I'm in credit for?
It's due to the estimate we gave for the DRO so it's not like it's my money I've paid, but from the energy suppliers perspective I'm in credit and surely they can't just keep it - does it just get cancelled or can I claim it (worth asking, as that could go towards my new energy supplier!)
