A PC that will last!! That pretty much depends on your definition of lasting. As usual, it all depends on what you want to use it for. You only really need to spend big money if you're into gaming. If your main use is a bit of office stuff, internet, and music downloads then almost any current PC will suffice. You seem to indicate that storage space is your priority. As you can buy 500GB hard drives for under £70 this is not an issue.

I would start by getting one of the monthly PC mags such as PCW, Computer Shopper or Computer Buyer (or check out their websites). These have loads of reviews and tips for buying new PCs. You can compare specs and see which is best for your needs.

Answer Forris' questions, & also tell us if you need a monitor (type+size), speakers (with/w_o subwoofer), dedicated soundcard (as opposed to onboard), keyboard+mouse & anything else.

Dell do very good value desktops, & some come with a good TFT monitor for not too much extra - check out dmxDimension for some deals.

A PC will last only as far as it meets one's needs. For some this could be 6 months, for others 5 years or more. I've had my present self-built PC for a little over 2 years - a mid-low range one for the time. I think it could easily go on for another 3 years if it wasn't for the fact that I'll have to upgrade everything to play most of the latest games (going to upgrade next year). G

P.S. Edited post, as taken too literally!

He did suggest the websites and that's free. And "better advice"? Surely that's debatable.
  • Why not have some fun and build your own? I've always picked all the bits I want and assebled them myself, it's a very easy job to do, and you get the satisfaction of saying "I built it myself" if it blows up you have the satisfaction of knowing it was because you tried to save a tenner, but don't go to PC world for all your parts, some can be double that of online specialists, saying all that Dell do do some nice kit.
