removing gas meter

Options
we have had an electric boiler fitted and no longer required gas in the property.
We are on a dual use tariff with edf energy paying the standing charge for gas ( 0.25p per day ).
I have rung to request the removal of the gas meter to avoid payibg the standig charges and advised it's £80 for this which is fine.
however edf have said once this is removed we need to contact the local network supplier ( sgn gas ) who will turn the supply of at the gas main.
I contacted sgn gas and I am receiving co flight information:
1- they say as soon as the meter is removed I should request a disconnection of gas and there will be a charge of £900 plus vat
2- another agent said if I didn't request a disconnection we would receive a letter in 12 months advising if gas is no longer required they would disconnect and no charge would be required

I can get get a definitive answer to what costs are involved and was wondering if anyone could advise further
Thanks

Wife works for a big developer and when they demolish something and get supply removed its very expensive. At the sort of cost your talking that's a lot of days until your saving anything.

Its paying up front too which isn't ideal. If you come to sell and someone needs gas they pay a lot to get it back on too.

  • Another option is to move the gas supply to a company that has zero standing charges for gas so you still have a gas supply (good selling point in the future) but it will not cost you anything.

Very sensible advice, just move gas to a supplier with Zero standing charge and forget it

Well ignoring the fact you want to pay tripple the cost for your heating...

2 is likely unless your supplioer push it to the distributor (may do if they own them or are sibling companies). Removing the meter is nothing to do with distribution so the second step is unneeded as it does nothing.

Will cost thousands to re-install and devalue your house significantly (I would not buy it without gas). In villages around here you can get a comparible one that is much bigger for 40K less without gas.

Only SGN (assuming they are your gas transporter) can provide you a definitive answer
Every disconnection job is different but the majority of residential work we carry out costs customers between £400 and £1200.
I see they quote the following typical costs for their supply regions
    £468 + VAT Scotland
    £1,007 + VAT within M25
    £911 + VAT outside M25

You can get a more specific quote for you here:

Why on earth have an electric boiler when you have gas? Your energy costs will be trebled.

It must vary depending on where in the country you live. My co-worker is with SSE for gas and electric (was previously M&S energy) and she had the gas meter removed for free. They even gave her £20 for failing to turn up the first time. The is in the ScottishPower region. My mum and dad have not used gas for years but have kept the meter in place. They are with Ebico for the gas and don't pay any charges. Could you report back how you get on?

Personally I would keep the gas at the property and try and get provider with zero or minimum standing charge.

Then if you sell your property it will be a selling point allowing buyers to rip out the electric boiler and put in a more money saving system.
