By 'last week', do you mean that all the work was completed in less than 5 days? That would ring alarm bells for me. When we had our small/double drive block paved 12 years ago it took over 2 weeks - digging out and filling the foundations alone (with a little mechanical digger) took the best part of a week alone. Our drive still looks as good as the day it was finished.

Try every means possible to pay by credit card - even if you only pay £100 and pay the (2% ?) surcharge on top. It would be worth if for peace of mind. I don't believe his card payment facility is unavailable either - more likely he doesn't want to pay the surcharge.

How would you expect him to accept a £10 card payment when his card payment facility is unavailable?
Because the card payment facility might actually be perfectly OK ... but he doesn't want to use it as it'll cost him a lot more in payment service charges?

DON'T pay by bank transfer, it provides you with no consumer rights protection whatsoever.

At this point it makes little difference paying by depict card, BT or cash.
  • Tell him that you used him as he stated on his website and van he accepted credit cards. Tell him you do not have the cash, and was going to pay by card, and pay card off at £200 per month.

Therefore if he cannot take cards, offer to pay him £200 per month. At least this way if it breaks up in 12 months time you can stop paying :T
20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D

OK so the man who likes to tell little porkies takes the £10.00 on his machine
Then the OP says since your machine now works I want to put the rest on
IMHO the trader is likely to have had his merchant agreement withdrawn for bad behaviour.
I would not be happy if I were the OP
