Car hire to Continent with Europcar

Hi, I recently got a quote from Europcar for a trip to the continent.
The daily hire rate for the vehicle was about £16/day, which was reasonable.
However, in order to be able to go to the continent, insurance was added along with Europdrive breakdown cover, which tripled the price.
My question is: am I obliged to take out the excess insurance and breakdown cover when these can be purchased elsewhere at better rates?

Why not ask them?0

Thanks for the helpful, informative response. The reason I don't ask them is because:
If I email them, they almost certainly will not reply.
If I phone them, they'll just say yes, you have to take out our insurance.
Businesses generally don't give advice on how to pay them less, do they!0 -

Surely you would need to phone them to arrange the hire? Call and say, I am looking to have the hire at £16 a day, but will arrange my own insurance. If they refuse, you have your answer, if they say its ok, you are ok.Not an expert, but like pensions, tax questions and giving guidance. There is no substitute for tailored financial advice.0 -
