My elderly and deaf DM has had a visit from a member of ther council's hearing impairment team today.
He has suggested a couple of workable items though one suggestion brings me here for some expert advice.
DM lives in a Glasgow tenement - i.e. one front door with intercoms for the eight flats (two each floor). Currently she has a setup for her individual intercom which flashes two lights in the flat, one in the living room and one in the kitchen. So far, so good!
The remaining problem is that she can't hear the visitor once she answers the intercom. Sometimes couriers ring every bell in order to get an answer. She knows when it's the postman as he tends to come at the same time roughly each day.
The HI bloke suggested a
where she could see who was at the door which would lessen her anxiety a great deal.
Now for my techie question - could this be installed only for her individual buzzer (like the flashing lights) or would it alert on the app every time someone stood at the main door?
I can't see her neighbours being very happy if she was able to watch all comings and goings. They are all very good with her and tend to be very supportive of her needs in the main. Would this be a move too far?
Thanks

If it's set up for motion detection it will detect (and listen to and record) anyone, as there's no way of discriminating, and as it's just a camera it won't actually be linked to the door intercom.
If cabling is possible I'd suggest a conventional CCTV camera wired to a small flatscreen monitor in the hall next to the handset. Then the monitor will only be live when she turns it on, and she is unlikely to be accused of standing in the hall all day watching it!
It might be possible to add video to the existing intercom system just with a camera in the door panel and changing her handset to a video one.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
Very helpful, many thanks.
I thought the Hive wasn't workable and appreciate the suggestion of an alternative. I'll investigate that further.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I'm not sure that leaving her mobile number open to all is wise.0

I think it would be possible to make something, instead of ringing a bell (whether you could make this is another story). It switches on a microphone and plays a message into the intercom to say that 'The occupant of this flat is deaf, and could you please text her on xxxx to gain access to the front door'
An easier way is to leave a note on the door to say that the owner is deaf, and they should txt the phone number on the packet label. Change your moms name to 'Mrs GERS - 07712345678' on her mail order stuff etc.

What about old school remote door bell? If the landlord allowed for a a simple remote wireless door bell button to be put beside the official one, your mother could carry the receiver unit in a top pocket so that she could hear it (those bells make quite a load noise).
These units only cost about £10. Your mother would need to be on one of the lower floors for the system to work.0 -

Thanks for replying.
And she can see the flashing lights when her individual intercom is pressed, it's hearing / identifying the person at the door which is the problem.
No landlord to worry about.0 -

Been tried, unfortunately her deafness is such that amplification does not help. All manner of hearing aids have been tried by both NHS and private audiologists over the years. DM has lost high frequencies, she can hear loud noises but not much speech.
I appreciate you responding, many thanks.0
