Paying for wrong meter

I have been in my flat 2.5 years - had a smart meter for 6 months.

As much as people dislike smart meters this one helped me notice inconsistencies with my electric usage and usage displayed on the smart meter. Today an electrician from First Utility came to check and said I've been paying from the wrong meter, which is what I thought. The wrong meter has been linked to my flat since the building was built (2007).

My bills have been low and he said it was likely i'd have to pay back what I used over the 2.5 years.

Do I have an argument that depending on how much the cost is I shouldn't have to pay/pay all as I was using It unaware of its real cost?

Has anyone else been in this situation?
