UTILITY REGISTRATION OFFICE
Almost got duped by this cold call outfit. My colleague went through the whole process after being told by EDF who worked through the URO and that they were the only people that could handle the new registration. He said our landlord had informed that we had taken over a small shop lease ( which was true) very long call, came up with a 5 yr deal...got details off us inc bank details. After discussion alarm bells rang. Therefore. I followed it up and spoke to a very belligerent 'advisor.'..when i warned him that I was recording the conversation and told him we did not require their services he became even more heated (one {Edited by Forum Team}) as he called himself, at least referred to me as 'Bud' kindly..most professional.) I asked for an email address to formerly request that he destroy any of our information and desist from further contact. I said I was concerned that they did not seem to have an address, email address or main phone number..he said they only had personal email so I asked for his..he said he hadn't got one...sorry to ramble on but this a very edited version. There is some info at Companies house that might apply to them , Company number 10650786. Whilst writing this just had another call this time from 'Power for Business'..they too couldn't offer me an email address so I thanked them for calling and said I would add their name to this piece..we phoned the energy supplier whose contract we almost fell for to warn them, but at this point not sure if there is anything more we can do regarding our information harvested by UTO? Any advice? couldn't find a way through trading standards or ofgem phone menu's...TS even offered an option for dog fouling..but nothing that offered a way to speak to someone for us. About time these sort of operations were shut down

Such a busy day fending off these outfits, the latest one Action Energy but who prefix that when they call you with 'Electricity Gas Registration'. I asked for the COMPANY email address
{Edited by Forum Team} corporate... Here is one anonymous review from Trustpilot

I've been badly stung by Action energy. Same as the other reviews. They imply they are a government run business who are regulating the energy industry. They claimed i was on an emergency electricity tariff which would be costing me a lot of money. They claimed my new supplier N Power were refusing to supply me (having first asked if I'd received my welcome letter from N power) then set me up on a more expensive tariff and tied me in to a 5 year deal with BES. Two days later i received my welcome letter from N power but BES are refusing to release me from my contract. I've had the ombudsmen involved and they have sided with my new energy supplier. Action energy are LIARS and completely unscrupulous.

Is ANYBODY official doing anything about this?

Google 'BES Utilities complaints'. Many interesting entries there, especially the one about the Ofgem ruling of 2015.

From personal experience via a friend's small business stand firm and don't be swayed or worn down by continual bullying calls from both BES directly or their agents.
  • Thank you for replying...we certainly won't give in, I just cannot understand how this can be so rife

What would concern me is the fact that you have parted with your bank details to one of the scammers.

You need to keep a close watch on your account in case they try and stick a DD on there.

In an extreme case you may need to close the account - not transfer it - and open a new one somewhere else and set up any existing DD's and payments you already have.
  • Thank you. In the meanwhile been in touch with EDF, a guy there was quite helpful, I Have put instructions i writing to them, proved we are entitled etc, should be sorted by wednesday. Today I am contacting an outfit called Theema.org.uk I will report back if they might be helpful to others. I wish Martin Lewis and fis team would weigh in on this, it is a national scandal
