GPS Android App for Walking

  • I use OS maps & think it's great. I download maps for routes I've planned, but don't use it that much on the trail, it's more of an emergency measure. I've also got the OS locate app. It very simply gives your 6 figure Grid Reference using gps. As I always take a paper map, this is great for figuring out where I am if I'm either lost or not kept my pace well on a trail without using up a load of phone battery - & it helps me to focus on my paper map reading instead of following a glorified satnav!

I far prefer a solution that means my phone will always have the map, wherever I am, whether or not I have a signal. I am now using Locus Maps. This is is free with a slightly annoying banner advert (I paid for the Pro version to remove it).

Locus supports vector maps. This is a much more efficient form of maps (rather than tile format) and makes it practical to store the whole of the UK on your mobile. You do lose some of the detail and shading, but If you are taking map and compass as well (which you should do as a safety issue) then you have the best of both worlds!.

Just had a look at Locus, looks promising.
Plenty of knowledgeable people on this thread, so can anyone recommend an Android app for basic geo-tagging of photos?
We take photos for reference at work, a simple location and date imposed on the photo would be sufficient.
    Thanks.
    Move along, nothing to see.

The built in camera app will do it as long as the GPS is turned on. No geotagging solution will make the location visible on the photo itself though. The location is stored in the EXIF data of the photo.

Ok so you can get apps that edit images to add the location data to the image itself. That isn't that common though.

There does seem to be a lot on the Play Store however do they not use their own camera App? Lots of complaints about Ads and pop ups to force you to upgrade to the paid for version though.

Which is precisely why I was asking for recommendations.
We just want to be able to quickly scroll through photos on the phone and instantly know a rough location and date without having to look at the exif data.
The Pro version of Locus maps claims to do this, but still would like to hear if anyone else uses this type of app.
    Move along, nothing to see.
