As a teacher (not at the university in question) I am also often agrivated by such errors. In this case I was completely unaware. I had always assumed it was related to shouldering the burden of the action. Off the bat makes much more sense. Noted0 -

I work in a school too, but non-teaching.
Tell your students! Now you know it's ''off your own bat'', you will notice it like I do.
Loads of intelligent people get that one wrong, so much so that I reckon the phrase might change, with time, into the 'wrong' word. Still annoys me though!
