Which card to pay off?

Our car is on it’s very last legs, hoping to get it through the better weather but will def need to replace before next winter.

Husband has a 1/5 credit rating thanks to a default of £40 with Three (on a pay as you go broadband that we were sold with incorrect information - moved house and cancelled direct debit/didn’t use broadband - they carried on billing to old address). They eventually admitted their fault and cancelled the debt but not the default.

Fast forward now and husband has a low credit rating. He’s got a credit card balance that we are paying off at a set amount each month.

My credit rating is 3/5 but I have more debt (that we are paying off at a set amount each month) than him.

We are hoping to lease a car later when it comes to getting a new one but we aren’t sure if it would be best to pay his credit card off or mine? I can’t see his credit rating improving by paying the credit card off because of the default from Three.

If we pay my credit card off then my rating would still be better than his but I’d still have more debt than him.

Any advice to what to do to increase the chances of one of us getting the lease on a new car please?

Thanks!

  • Not enough information to say.

Credit worthiness isn't measured in credit scores, but in credit history and circumstances.

So it depends on what data you have on your files, the age of negative data, the debt you're carrying at what rates, plus your incomes.

If Three have admitted that the default is entirely their fault, you need to get back onto them and request that they remove it from the credit file.

The credit file shows as follows:

    LENDERLowell (Hutchinson 3G Uk LTD)

    Date of default
    12/08/2015

    Default balance
    £ 40

    BALANCE£ 0

    UPDATED06/09/2017

    STATUSSatisfied

Will this still be impacting his ability to get credit?

    Thanks.
  • It's not a great thing to have on his history, but at least it's satisfied and car finance is easier to get than most, as it's secured on the car.
