Car insurance - driving license with policy holder

Dear all, I am having a medical condition, thinking to report to DVLA. And I suppose there will be a related test to review if I can still keep the driving license.

Per advice from my doctor I think I can keep on driving, and DVLA will not revoke my license. But I am just preparing for the worst case scenario - if unfortunately it is really revoked.

Now for my car I am the registered owner, insurance policy holder and main driver. And my wife is an additional named driver with the insurance cover.

If my license is revoked, obviously I will not drive. But is the car insurance policy still valid for my wife?

I think the safest way is to call the insurance company and update the situation. But I also worry in that case the insurance company will cancel the policy immediately, making any future insurance cover difficult.

Or in that situation I should simply cancel the policy and buy another one with my wife as policy holder and named driver?

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

  • You may find that DVLA revoke your licence immediately upon notification and it will then be for you to appeal the revocation (this is what happened to my father when he was diagnosed with Alzheimers about 10 years ago - in his case, despite his doctor advising him to, he didn't appeal as he knew that he would become a danger on the roads in time).

You will have to contact the insurance company anyway to advise them of your condition so that would be the best time to discuss with them how best to proceed.

The will be unlikely to cancel the policy immediately but may give you 30 days notice there & then.

As a general rule, Car Insurers will not alter your policy if you notify the DVLA and the DVLA do not restrict your licence in any way.

You don't mention your condition, if you mention your condition we may be able to give more specific advice, If you don't want to you may find any society website for your condition eg Heart Foundation have a page on their website giving advice.

  • Doctor advised I have mild glaucoma with my eyes. I understand after reporting to DVLA, they will advise me to take an eye test. And based on the eye test result, it will determine if I can still keep the driving license.

My key concern - if after the eye test DVLA advised to revoke my license, how should I manage the current car insurance policy, and keeping the insurance cover for my wife as driver.

    1. The policy still covers my wife as additional driver. However as me (as policy holder) has license status change, it looks like I need to inform the insurance company according to the terms.

    2. Informing the insurance company (and discuss how to convert the policy to cover my wife as driver) seems to be the right thing to do. But I am not sure how the insurance company would deal with the situation. Least thing I want, is that they cancel the policy immediately (am I getting too extreme?). This will make any future insurance cover difficult.

    3. So an alternative - in that situation I cancel the policy actively, and buy another new policy with my wife as policy holder and named driver.

Grateful for your view and advice. Thanks a lot!

You would need to have your wife as policy holder and main driver.
Unless the DVLA have revoked your licence (which they have not as yet) I doubt the insurers would cancel it there and then. Tell your insurers yes and ask them to run you a new quote with your wife as policy holder as if you can no longer drive your policy would need to be cancelled and a new one set up.
