Anyone on here know the Chippenham area

Not sure where to post this as it doesn't really fit into any category.

Im going down near Trowbridge next month and when Ive been before Ive stayed at the Travelodge at Melksham.

Looking at booking a night this time the price is £74 for the night.

However there are 2 alternatives nearby which are both on the Chippenham Leigh Delamere M4 services. One Eastbound at £33 and Westbound at £38 so Im considering booking one of these.

As I don't know the area that well Im not sure if these will be convenient or if it will mean going miles out of my way with them being on the motorway.

I will be driving down from Manchester and so will be going down the M4 but I will need to book in, then travel to Trowbridge then return to the Travelodge later, The following day I will need to return to Trowbridge for a couple or hours and then drive home.

So, is it worth my while trying to save £30+ and if so would I be best booking the Eastbound or Westbound one. Ive no idea how convenient it is to access the services.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

The services are just west of M4 J17 (by about a mile), if you're coming down from Manchester then I assume you're coming down the M5 then on to the M4? You can get to Trowbridge from both J17 for Chippenham and J18 for Bath, so whether eastbound or westbound is better probably depends on which journey is more time critical - the services are much closer to J17 than J18

No idea what the travelodges are actually like though!

  • Eastbound (towards London) had a secret entrance / exit for Travelodge customers, but it's only a mile or so short of the Chippenham junction anyway so you could just get on the motorway anyway. If you're coming from London you could come off at the Chippenham junction and use the secret entrance to get in to save the round trip to the Bath junction and turn around.

Westbound has a secret entrance for the Travelodge but I don't know if you can go out that way as well. If you can't, you'd have to go to the Bath junction and turn round.

To be honest it would be worth talking to them directly, my information is several years out of date.

have you looked at the Beckington or Warminster Travelodges? Both a fair bit nearer Trowbridge than Leigh Delamere,

Thank you for the replies. I have looked at the Beckington and Warminster Travelodges as well and they are both double the price if the Leigh Delamere ones. Think Im having second thoughts about staying at the services though.

The Melksham one is nice, we have stayed there 4 times now so I think it may be worth paying more. By the time we have travelled from the services to Trowbridge and back twice we will probably use the difference in price in petrol.

The price of the Melksham one has also dropped £4 since yesterday so it perhaps changes daily.

Leigh delamere is a long way from J18.
There are always local entrances for staff but they are not sign posted.

Have you looked at the premier Inn in Chippenham? It's only about 5 mins from J17

Are you set on a Travelodge / cheap chain hotel? Just looking on hotels.com there's a few places much closer to Trowbridge for under £60 a night, one at £40 currently with 8/10 on their ratings. With the saving on fuel going back and worth it could well be worth it, especially as you're only going one night - if it's awful, you just don't stay there again!

It would be at least 40 mins to get from Leigh Delamere to Trowbridge on a good day if the traffic is clear, and signs have gone up to say that there are major road works starting on the A350 at Melksham on Feb 4th so I would suggest staying south of Melksham if you are going to Trowbridge. The Melksham Travelodge would be fine as it’s south of the roadworks. As someone else said, also worth checking out the premier inn which is in the centre of Trowbridge.

Probably out of budget but the Premier Inn Trowbridge is a good location as it is close to the Station etc.
  • The Premier Inn in Chippenham would be easier than going to the services and back, but as other people have said, Chippenham (and its motorway junction) is a fair way from Trowbridge, so if you are going to have to be in Trowbridge on two days, there must be more convenient options.
  • The Moonraker Hotel currently has a deal via Agoda for a room for £46. It is situated at Trowle just about a mile or so from Trowbridge Centre.
