No MOT issued after Failure & Repair

Arranged with local car service and MOT place (who have always been great and I've used them many times before) to drop my van off for a service and MOT on the morning of the day I went away on my hols a couple of weeks ago - they were to drop it off on my drive after the work was done, so that it would be ready for me to use when I start back at work this Monday.

It's on my drive, I can see all the work has been done, but no paper work was left. Checking on line it appears they have forgotten to issue the MOT certificate as only the fail is showing with the list of work to be done, a track rod ball joint, a replacement for a nearly knackered tyre and rear indicator bulbs which were the "wrong colour??" - all of which has been done.

I'm not going to drive it with no MOT and obviously going to speak to them tomorrow (not paid them yet, as agreed with the boss to pay on my return) I'm assuming with the time lapse, they'll have to test it all over again which'll mess up my work schedule and lose me a couple of jobs for the day - or is there any other way they can issue a valid MOT?

It might be that for whatever reason they did a retest and it didn't go through. They know the work has been done so you might find you just need to drive it down to them first thing and they'll do it on the spot. Personally that is the course of action I'd be taking.

When does your old MOT expire? If it's still got time on it, then it's still valid - this is precisely the reason why you can take it in for a test with 30 days to go, and the expiry date remains the same.

It may be that they did the work, did the re-test, but couldn't record it on the computer, and that'll be done first thing Monday.

Indicators the wrong colour - are the lenses clear? If so, it may be that the bulbs weren't orange ones, or they may have faded.

    Careful!

    Has the MOT actually expired?

If so, I'd be careful to call first and make sure they book it as an appointment before you drive down there...
Your odds of getting stopped or logged driving without MOT on the way there might be slim, but is it worth the risk? For 5 mins of phone call, I wouldn't take the risk.

MOT expired 19th Jan, they did the failed test and work on the 10th I spoke to the boss on the phone around 4pm that day who said all was okay it would pass now they'd fixed the faults and they were just waiting on the tyre to be delivered.

    That's not true,

If your vehicle fails its MOT before your old MOT certificate expires:
    • You can’t drive it with dangerous faults. These need to be repaired first. If you use a vehicle with a dangerous fault you can be fined £2,500, be banned from driving and get three points on your licence. This is because your vehicle is automatically recorded as no longer road legal on the UK’s digital vehicle database, so the authorities will know about its condition.

From the OP's post you don't know if it had a dangerous fault or not.

Oh, sorry just noticed its an AdrianC reply, of course you wont be wrong, sorry. Carry on driving, you'll be fine or fined

  • Maybe I've missed it, but have you paid them for the work yet?

Could that be what they're waiting for, then they'll test it?
