Instant buy it now questions

Seems now days as soon as I list something I get a question asking what the buy it now price is. Do people now get notifications when an item they are intersted in gets posted?

Clearly you are listing something that will sell - always a good start. It's up to you to decide if you want to say 'aye go on then' & agree a higher than starting (& ebay recommend 40% higher) price.

Me, I listed a few things & some got bids on in hours & yet the bidder never messaged me to suggest a bulk deal. Maybe audiobooks work differently. (Certainly they've all gone to different households now!)

Sorry, that doesn't answer your question - yes, you can get emails from ebay if you have specific searches set. That algorithm does not discriminate between auction & buy it now listings clearly.
  • I collect military medals with certain surnames, and I have saved searches with eBay with these names and get an email once a day of anything listed within the last 24 hours.

So, it's not instant, but fairly quick.
  • I start everything at 99p I think I will pass on ebays suggestion of +40%

99p starts are a risky strategy especially at this time of year when ebay is quiet. Far too many items sell on that first bid and assuming you are charging only accurate postage you are likely to end up with only pennies after fees and charges.

I assume the plus 40% which you think is amusing is the uplift that ebay require if you also offer a BIN, which of course is an expensive way to sell. Easier to just start at the minimum price you will accept and go from there.

I have found I do better when starting at 99p as it seems to attracted a much higher amount of watchers hoping for a bargain. Depends what the item is, things like gold and silver which I have recently been selling have an intrinsic value are unlikely to sell cheap even if they have low starting prices.

As above 99p is risky, i bought something for £40 and didnt use it, sold it a while later with a 99p start, one starting bid very quickly and then nothing. no more bids.

Be being nice i even delivered it, they were willing to pay more just lucky nobody else bid.

Set the start price at the minimum that you want for the item.

Just takes it to be one of those listings that do not show on the system.

I mentioned before someone on a forum posting an ebay link. Searching ebay could not find the item though. Tried all the different ebays. uk,com,fr, de etc etc.
No such item. Even looking at the selling items showed that seller to be sellign nothing. But using the listing number worked. and i bought it (VERY CHEAP) and it arrived.

    I agree 99p is risky.

I once won a large collection only item for 99p.

The seller really messed me about with the collection and I had to keep messaging them. Even when I went to collect it at the arranged time they did not answer the door for ages but I just kept on knocking!!

I was going to give them £5 when I collected it but they annoyed me so much I ended up giving them just the 99p!

I remember doing that a few times, in fact more than a few times especially when private sellers were limited to the 99p start and everyone started everything at 99p.

I bought quite a few items, mainly sci fi, small collectables vintage jewellery etc where item titles were perhaps limited or such like, then turned round and listed them on my business account to make money. I won a brand new ipod 'unwanted gift' once as seller had used the term 'music player' but apparently it got lost in the post (sigh) and I was refunded almost immediately and seller went on to relist for £40 or thereabouts.

Yes this flipping is part of my business model. Luckily people still think 99p starts will always make them a fortune, along with spelling mistakes (Jeager anyone?) poor titles & descriptions & photos, and the old favourite of auctions ending at 1am
