You didnt read the O/P correctly either - the O/P doesnt actually say they've been buying 32GB eMMC machines, so their budget may not be £150.

As such, i'd propose spending a little more than on your 4GB, 128GB SSD, no operating system machine at £150 and going for an 8GB, 240GB SSD, Win10 preinstalled laptop that will be ready to go and better RAM and storage for £199.99, as per my original post.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-X220-Core-i5-2-50GHz-16GB-Office-2016-240-SSD-Windows-10-Laptop/264097522065?hash=item3d7d706191:m:m2vzftxERekDxKo2pbMTFJw:rk:1:pf:0

That new Lenovo that grumpycrab posted is a good balance if the O/P wants to go new and did well on hotukdeals

Actually I did. The comment was for people who insist on buying that rubbish because they want to buy new on a small budget, when we know that there are high quality business devices out there for the same amount of cash.
I guessed a low budget of around £200 if the devices he was reading about were failing. Didn't imagine devices with 32 GB eMMC were more than that.

As to the device that I have recommended, it's in a different league to the X220.
First of all, it is newer, maybe two years newer.
Secondly, it had a Full HD screen.
Thirdly it has a Touch screen.
Fourthly, it has a 3G modem within for a SIM card in case WiFi is not available.
Fifthly, it has a six month warranty.(though to be fair, though your listing has just one month, there are others with one year)
Sixthly, they are supplied with new batteries.
Seventhly, even with the addition of the 4GB RAM option and having Windows 10 installed for you, it is still only £186 in total for Home and £201 for Pro. In my opinion, better value and much better specs than the X220

The only caveat is that they are Grade B, but people are still reporting that the condition is good. Of course if you get one with screen issues, ask for another...or just ask nicely to have one in the best condition possible in the first instance.
As to storage, I have a few devices with 120 GB SSD and have no issue with storage capacity.
I don't think having a 128GB SSD will be a sticking point, since nothing he looked at was likely more.

So for those reasons I would choose the e7240 over the X220.

In true money saving style, I suggest that one buys the base model at £150, buys a 4GB module from CEX for £8 and installs Windows 10 Pro for nothing.
£158 for a device with 8 GB of RAM and Windows 10 Pro. Lots left in the budget for more storage if wanted.

Latitude also went Hot on HUKD; https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/refurbished-dell-latitude-e7240-ultrabook-i5-4200u-4gb-128gb-ssd-touchscreen-laptop-150-blackmoreit-ebay-3127576

Yeah, i take your point(s) actually.

I've been using X220s recently in the business i was in hence the recommendation, but that seems better overall. Not totally fussed on the styling of Dells of that era but thats a wholly subjective thing.

Peterlmack you could have told us the current make, model, and while you are at it, also the memory and disk size of your exiting laptop?

Mmmmm those e7240 were fantastic A-grade stock, but now they are b-grade with screen blemishes, not sure it is a great deal. Screen inperfections always put me off.

Not all have screen blemishes. No need to accept one with screen imperfections. It's a fantastic deal. Clearly they think so too on HUKD.
  • In a similar situation. Need to get a replacement laptop, got around £300 to spend (anything less is a bonus!) been looking at refurbished/ex demo laptops on laptopstation.co.uk and can't make up my mind. Just don't know what I should be looking for!

Just usual things like netflix and emails. But I really don't want something thats going to be slow!
