EON Energy Bill Up 500% Year on Year

Happy Saturday all, hope you are well!

I am looking for any support or advice that can be given around my EON energy bills which have shot up unexpectedly due to heating costs the last few months and i am unsure why.

November - up 700% year on year - c.£250 per month (5k kWh)
December - up 600% year on year - c.£220 per month (4.7k kWh)

The property is a small 2 bedroom flat and there has not been a change in my view around the amount that the heating has been on / off. Last year the bill was c.£40 and now up to £250.

Has anybody else had a similar issue with EON? We had somebody check the meter in October time but i don't foresee how that would have impacted?

Thank you for any advise

I suspect you were not paying enough (£40) so now you are having to catch up by paying £250.
Unless you are saying that you are actually using more?

Do you read the meter yourself and send the readings to your supplier. Do yo check that your bills are using actual meter readings and aren't based on estimates.

If your DD was insufficient to cover your consumption then you'll have arrears to pay

You may well be paying back a heap of arrears if you've been underpaying and someone actually read the meter properly in October.
That's why your DD leapt up in November and December.

Please dont confuse your direct debit with you bill. A direct debit is what you pay towards the cost of your energy, the bill is what you've used and therefore shows how much you should pay. It shoukd be based on actual meter readings, but if you dont send them in regularly then they just estimate your consumption until someone does actually read it.

Thats when you get a ginormous catch-up bill - the cause of at least 90% of the whinges on this forum.

You can avoid this by reading the meter every month, sending the readings into your supplier and checking that your on-line satement/bills do actually reflect your meter readings.

Looking at the forum it may well be that we are playing catch up on arrears, however our bill states we have used 5k kWh in a month rather than "you used this much in the month but we are adding x amount to pay off your arrears". Which would obviously make anybody think it was just for that 1 month period.

The person who checked the meter in October was only British Gas to check the boiler rather than from EON but they did check the meter was there and working.

But how would they know you had used 5k units in a month unless the meter had been checked the month before? are you reading the meter every month?

The numbers i supplied are all based on estimates, we are not checking the meter every month and sending it to the supplier. The bill says it is based on estimates which include november and december where the increase came. Thank you for reply.

Addition: It states electricity & gas

Read your meters NOW and send them to Eon. How do they compare with the estimates ?

Get into the habit of reading your meters at least every month to prevent these surprises.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Give us the actual meter reads and the start and end dates from the last actual read to now, then we'll see your actual usage in that period: ideally over a year. Imperial or metric meter?

Hello CavendishWobble and already some excellent advice on here. Thanks all.

This certainly sounds like a catch-up bill following a series of estimates. These catch-ups can come as a bit of a shock that's why, as others have said, it's always best to let us have meter readings wherever possible.

Catch-ups also give a bit of a false picture as they lump more usage than would be expected into a shorter time. We'll be happy to look at spreading the balance over a more manageable period if this would help.

We're always keen to have actual readings and provide various ways for customers to send them. This includes online through our website, phone app or Live Chat service; by phone or text, email or letter. The more readings we have, the more accurate accounts are. Smart meters could be another option. They send us readings automatically so you don't have to.

Also, if you've registered with our website, you can create your own bills in real time by popping in readings and choosing 'request a bill.' It's a great way to keep on top of energy bills.

Let me know if you need any more information CavendishWobble as happy to help.
