Ground Rent, how actually pay

Newbie leaseholder, I have a request to pay ground rent, with name and address of the freeholder.

But how do I actually pay it? Sending them a check?
There are no details as to how to pay.
They need to provide a receipt - I was told that it should be acknowledged by ground rent collectors ie not my freeholder?

Personally I send my cheques in first class post and get proof of postage which I take a scan of (just bring the envelope to a post office counter and ask, no extra charge for the proof of postage just the cost of the first class stamp). I also take a scan of the cheque and letter together before I send it. Only receipt I've ever received was a rather tersely worded email!

Rather paranoid but only takes a few minutes and solid evidence of payment should the freeholder suddenly decide to kick up a fuss. Also useful if you need evidence of ground rent payment for another reason (e.g. a remortgage).

When I remortgaged I sent in the letter scans + proof of postage and email as proof I was up to date with the ground rent. This was accepted by the mortgage company's lawyers without complaint.

When I got my first such letter, I emailed the freeholder and asked if I could make a bank transfer instead of sending a cheque. He agreed and that's how I've paid ever since.

Do you mean you want a receipt? Or does your lease say that they must provide a receipt?

If not, they might refuse, or charge you for providing a receipt.

If you enclose a stamped addressed envelope, and perhaps even a pro-forma receipt for them to sign, they might sign it and post it at no charge.

My ground rent and service demands give me the option of paying by bank transfer or by cheque. If I want a receipt I have to send them a stamped addressed envelope.

I just cannot fathom why on earth they do not provide payment details, I'll send a cheque and ask for bank details for next year.

So much hassle for almost nothing.
