Basic Bank Account

Options
I called Nationwide, whom I have an account with, wanting to open a free basic bank account to service some money that is jointly contributed by my family for shared projects. They told me I couldn't add a free account as I already have another account with them. Having just read about the right to the so called "hidden" basic accounts. Is this true that I can't hold one alongside my other account?

[STRIKE]As far as I am aware, Basic Accounts are designed for people who don’t have a bank account or don’t qualify for a standard current account. Is the account you already have a standard current account?[/STRIKE]

    Misunderstood the query....
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Nationwide have always allowed up to 4 current accounts. They can be of the same or of different types. Only one of their accounts, FlexPlus, has a charge. FlexAccount and FlexDirect are free. Just apply online, don't bother talking to anyone.

If for whatever reasons an online application is also unsuccessful, try a different bank.
  • If the OP wanted a basic account then as he already holds an account with Nationwide he is not eligible for a basic one.
Perhaps he wanted to use it for international payments which might be free of charge?

The term Basic account has a specific meaning to banks. Basic accounts are intended for people who can't get an ordinary current account (usually due to bankruptcy or a bad credit history). You only have a right to such an account if you can't get another account. As you do have another current account, you don't need a Basic one, so Nationwide are entitled to refuse you. Most banks have a similar rule.

If all you want is an ordinary account without a monthly fee, just open a FlexAccount (you can have more than one). There are no charges providing you don't go overdrawn or have any failed payments.
