BG - prepay meters switch

I want to switch from prepay meters (which were in the house when I moved in) to direct debit but British Gas have refused to allow this. I have a 'fair' credit score with Experian and Experian say that's not the issue and British Gas don't know what their problem is with my score either.

I've looked at MSE til I'm cross eyed so looking for advice/help. Is it really as simple as ringing a new supplier and asking to switch to their company? And If I switch to a new supplier, how do I know they will allow me to switch meters in the future? I'm loathe to jump into anything without more knowledge.
Thanks :(

The one that appears to be the least likely to properly credit check you is EDF..
In the past we have had an employee of theirs( at least she said she was ! ) that EDF do not do ANY credit checks at all, even though it says on their website they do.
If that is true I m staggered that one of the big 6 simply accept anyone to have a credit meter to possibly rack up over £2k credit without any background checks.
Appearing on the Electoral Roll could increase your chances possibly

How would I know ? just advising that appearing on the electoral roll could be advantageous and could boost credit score by 50 points..Possibly enough to swing it. Lots of new occupiers do not appear on electoral roll
.You don`t have to be on the published electoral roll available to everyone to access if you want,, although interested parties will pay for the private access..
