Ring Scottish Power back and tell them that your gas meter is still collecting for the previous tenants debt. I would have some info from your gas meter ready, so take a pen and paper with you to your meter and take note of the amounts showing on the following screens...
1) Do not put you card in the meter. Press the red button twice and you will see an amount "owed". Take note of that amount.
2) Do not put your card in the meter yet. Press and hold the red button until you hear a beep. Once it beeps start pressing the button in and out until you get to screen 24 (all the screens are numbered). Screen 24 will prompt you to insert your gas card, so do so, and then press the red button twice and take note of the numbers on screen 26 and 27. (You need to be quite quick with this whole process or you will find yourself jumping back to the first screen again and have to start over).
Those are the three main gas debt screens on your meter, and by providing the info on them, Scottish Power will send an electronic message to your card to remove the debt. They will also be able to advise you how to activate this message, and they should refund you any amount you have paid towards the debt.
Good Luck0 -
ive done that and they said a message was sent but there still is money owed on the meter :mad:0

Well you have likely not picked up the message yet....have you topped up atleast 3 times at the same shop on three different days? If so then best thing to do is give Scottish Power a ring. They could contact siemens and find out where the message is and why you have not picked it up yet.0

Sometimes the updates don't work so if you have done as Pixie has stated, get back onto them.
It's a very common thing that inexperienced Supplier staff try to get you to pay for the previous tenant. You are not liable at all.
They can update your key, or give yo a new key if it's faulty or even send out an engineer to clear the debt.
Keep at it.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
thanks i will do0

It is really common for a new tenant to be sent a gas card which does not clear the previous tenants debt even though they are supposed too. Usually the card will clear the maximum debt recovery rate and leave the debt behind which makes it even worse for the new tenant as the gas meter will then collect 70% of the every top up made towards the debt.
A new card would not help the situation, and National Grid will not go out to reset the meter, however in cases where the debt remains on the meter even though all correct procedures have been followed by the tenant and the supplier, a decommission/recommission of the meter can be arranged. That is effectively a meter reset, but only usually arranged as a last resort.0
