Ice skating and ice hockey

If anyone is looking for low impact exercise that improves balance, cardiovascular fitness and agility, take a look at skating. I used to do long distance running, 10 km, but my knees became so painful I had to give up. I still miss it something rotten. Running through the New Forest is amazing. Running through a forest at night on a cold winters day is so relaxing and rewarding.
Skating is incredible fun, and strengthens the knee muscles, which helps the knees. It’s also very good for general fitness. Ice hockey is fantastic, the most fun I have ever had. And suitable for any age, and both sexes. If you have kids, they can learn too, though they might learn more quickly than you! It’s also a very sociable sport, as is ice skating. And if you are more into elegance, figure skating might be for you. Or even ice dancing.
By the way, I’m 55, and started learning skating at 53. I scored three goals tonight in causal scrimmages (informal hockey games). If I can, anyone can. One lad who attends some sessions is over 70!

amused by the concept of ice hockey being 'low impact' - I know you don't mean non-contact but it still tickled me thinking back to footage I have seen. I can see how skating would work if the knees can't take the jarring any more.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Hee hee. Yes I meant low impact on the joints. Rec hockey is normally non checking, so you don’t get flattened, but of course there is some degree of contact. That said, we wear lots of body armour, so we are well protected. I wear a full face cage and high end pads, I’m too old for heroics.0 -

Do you have your own skates? Hire ones are awful. Sadly you need to pay a decent amount for skates, about £250+ for hockey skates. You Tube has lots of instructional videos that really help. And skating coaches are good too, albeit not cheap. Then again, personal trainers cost lots too.0
