Static caravan/park home - over 50s only??

Hello MSE-rs,

I am hoping to buy a home and have been looking at static residential caravans / park homes as a much cheaper alternative. However, every single one I have looked at will only accept people over 50/55. Is this normal? Can this count as age discrimination? I have found this really disheartening, I'd appreciate any advice, or if anyone knows any way around this! thanks :)

First off, don't get blinded by the cheap purchase prices. There are a lot of financial downsides - basically, you're at the mercy of the site management, and it can work out far more expensive than you think.

    No, it's not "age discrimination".
    Residential mobile homes

Residential mobile home parks are allowed to set minimum age limits for people who want to live there. Many sites restrict residence to people aged 50 or over. Site owners must set out the age restriction clearly in the purchase or rental agreement covering the use of the home. This restriction doesn’t apply to site visitors, or to holiday parks or homes.

Site owners can provide a home to someone outside the age limit if they want to, as long as the sale or rental is not made on worse terms – for example, they can’t charge more.

Well, it is, but it isn't unlawful age discrimination.

Just seen Rightmove ads for brand new luxury park homes in Hampshire £320,000 to £400,000! Plus a major park owner is advertising park homes on another Hampshire park for £340,000 and £250,000 in Bedfordshire!
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Not sure that's a new caravan park if its the same one as I've just seen. I had some friends living there back in the 80's. It was full of youngsters back then though and we had some pretty crazy times.

Although , ironically, those youngsters are now the oldies not allowing more youngsters in !
  • Its a bit like some fathers regarding all young men with suspicion when they have teen daughters. They know what they are like and what they get up to lol.

Just like 50s+ owning all the houses, protesting at attempts to build more in case it affects the value of their property and then complaining that their area is dying because nobody young is coming in.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
