Overseas returns

If you sell an item to a buyer outside the EU, and the buyer reports that it is defective on arrival and requests a return, am I correct in thinking that the returned item should not be liable for any import charges when it comes back into the UK?

I don't sell abroad myself however I believe buyer has to tick the box 'return' on the custom form, if they don't you have to pay then claim costs back.0
