Metastatic cancer and PIP

Just to add that a letter from your doctor or oncologist will be helpful for the PIP application. particularly so if they can explain the impact on your day-to-day life and personal care needs.
If you can get this, I would suggest you show it to the Macmillan welfare advisor and include it with the PIP form.

Hi Beenie,
Good luck with your PIP claim. For me Macmillan were no help at all. I ended up getting help from the benefits advisor at my local Maggie's.
My GP completed the DS1500 but this was rejected by the DWP.
I then went the other route, again I got turned down but then got the standard rate care part on appeal.
The support group I go to, we all have different experiences with applying for PIP. Others have received the full amount without completing anything.
I was diagnosed de novo with Mets to my liver.

Just to say, don't be surprised if your PIP claim is denied, no matter what you put in it, be prepared to have to ask for [and send another letter for] an MR.
Ask your Mcmillan advisor to fill the form in to start with, and sign a consent form for them to do that, they are more likely to understand what you can and can't do than you are in relation to the questions asked in the form, because if you're like me, you'll read it, and go, Oh, I can do that maybe once, but not understand that safeness and repeatedly doing something are not the same thing.
Also be aware that if you have a home assessment [ which can take up to 4 months to organise] if you manage to walk to the front door and back, they'll likely say there's nothing wrong with you, or at least they did in my case....Be prepared for your claim to be rejected initially, if it isn't, woop woop, if it is, go back to the advisor again.
Are you able to claim contribution based ESA?
Good luck.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -

I totally disagree, sorry. Lots of people claim PIP successfully first time without any problems at all, we just don't hear the good stories, naturally. If someone has an award they're happy with they have no questions to ask, so we don't hear their story.
I claimed PIP successfully first time without any problems at all. For my first review my award was increased.
My daughter also claimed it successfully, first time and was awarded Enhanced for both parts. She also had a home assessment with an appointment date just 2 weeks after returning the form. Waiting times for assessments depend on backlog in your area, even for home assessments it can be quick.
She's also just had a review, which was paper based this time. Assessment report recommends award stay the same, Enhanced for both parts.
Not everyone has bad experiences, that's a fact.0 -

There's nothing in my post to suggest I was talking about everyone, I was just saying don't be surprised if it is...because if it is, you might feel like you can't be bothered to keep going for it, or you might be really bloody annoyed [like I was].Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
Your post was so negative, it really doesn't matter if you were talking about everyone, or yourself. The last thing the OP wants is people like you scaring them with a comment like that. There's nothing in my post to suggest I was talking about everyone, I was just saying don't be surprised if it is...because if it is, you might feel like you can't be bothered to keep going for it, or you might be really bloody annoyed [like I was].0 -
I apologise completely, scaring them was not my intention at all.
Sorry OP, please don't be put off by me.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
Hi,
Just wanted to add that my brother in law claimed pip and I think esa under similar circumstances to yourself. Although it took a bit of time to organise he had no issues being allocated as eligible- the assessors came out to his house to see him. He had been given 9-18 months survival depending on treatment options.
The Macmillan adviser later on was able to put him forward for grants from Macmillan for help towards clothing (due to the amount of weight he had lost)
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but speak to your medical team regarding bone pain, there are things they can do to help (if they aren’t already)
Best wishes0
