Virgin Media port landline

If anyone has any suggestions for getting my landline number back, all suggestions gratefully received.
I made the same mistake as seemingly many others have, of trusting Virgin to port my existing land line number to my new Virgin phone line. Big mistake. Requested number to be ported when I signed up on 30th December, installation arranged for 12th Jan. I assumed everything was in hand. When my existing Sky number still didn't work on my Virgin line after being cut off on 17th Jan I queried this with Virgin. They advised that Sky had not released the number when asked, but that they would complete a form requesting this. Today, I received a text message advising my number couldn't be ported because it was no longer active. Of course it isn't, but it was when Virgin should have requested it. Phoned Virgin to be told there was a problem on 12th Jan with porting the number, but now nothing they could do, number was gone. Not happy, phoned back again and asked to escalate to a manager. Now told VM had no record of my request to port number until my call of 17th Jan - doesn't tie in with what I was told on the 2 previous occasions. Told I should ask Sky to reactivate my number temporarily for Virgin to retrieve it. Sky tell me that's impossible and Virgin didn't ask for the number to be ported! Sky have now deactivated number and started process of returning it to the 'rangefinder', BT. Will take up to 10 working days to be back with BT., but they will likely not release the number unless I sign up to their services. Cue phone call back to Virgin to say that I expect them to retrieve my number from BT. I hope they can, but frankly not hopeful given their abysmal track record. Meanwhile, one elderly confused mother-in-law and ill wife ( who needs to be reachable by phone from hospital staff) are left with the problem of a temporary(?) Virgin number. All in all not impressed, and frankly likely to cancel my new Virgin contract unless they sort things out this week! 😠😠
My advice to anyone thinking of moving to Virgin Media - avoid at all costs.
