Sat in the dark watching the inaccuracies of my smart meter

Hello!
I received my EON bill today and a quite shocked at how much the increase has been compared to this period one year ago. I have broken it down for anyone who would be so kind to help:

27TH NOV 2017 - 23RD JAN 2018
Electricity - 484 kilowatts per hour
Gas - 5128 kilowatts per hour

My Bill is usually around £61 for both and I am usually left with a credit.
I pay direct debit.
I live in a 3 bedroom semi detached, two adults only.

10TH OCTOBER 2018 - 23RD JAN 2019
Electricity - 4235 kilowatts per hour
Gas - 89 kilowatts per hour

From being in credit last quater, I am now £894 in debt with EON.
I have a smart meter, I am currently sat in the dark, with every appliance switched off (it's cold and dark) and yet the £ usage is going up around a penny a minute.

I have spoken with EON who claims everything is normal.
I even questioned the very low gas bill, to which they couldn't answer themselves.

I have opted to pay £100 to get my smart meter tested. Am I right in doing this?

Safe to say our energy usage doesn't seem to have changed since this time last year. No new appliances etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sara

turn your consumer unit/fuse box main/red switch off. (have a torch!) and see if the meter continues to rise.

Also post what brand your meter is
  • Sadly I am not gifted with the height of a Victoria Secret model and cannot reach. I will get my partner to do this when he returns home shortly.

Your bill is a level I can only dream of. We are about £175pm on electric only (and we have no electric heating or water).

However, our meter shows us using approx 0.20p an hour with basic things on. (The expensive items are known and I am ignoring those for the moment). Even when the expensive things are running it goes up to around 50p a minute. Still less than you.

At 1p a minute, you are running at a higher rate than I am. Have you turned an immersion heater on or do you have an Electric AGA running incorrect hours? (we had the latter until recently and found our meter times were set incorrectly and needed a new meter).

So, I suspect you do have an issue.

Eons new smart meters are now Secure Liberty meters which show a tiny decimal point which is hard to see. The number after the decimal point is ignored. first 7 numbers used with Secure Liberty meters.( the ones with a small keyboard ) Also these meters show Kvarh reading which should be ignored of course. Are you confusing the IHD monitor with the actual smart meter itself ?

Kwh means kilowatt hours, not kilowatts per hour.
  • Hi it currently says £8.06 for the day, I went very close to view this.
Will turn everything off via fuse box shortly and update
Thanks everyone for taking the time to read

Press button 9 to get the reading.

Are these your readings or from the bill ? Do any of these have a letter E (meaning estimated) against them ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Hi do you mean on my smart meter? There is no button 9
Do you mean on the external thingymabob on the side of the house?
No E next to the readings on the bill

Yes, if your actual meter is outside in an external meter box.You cannot rely on the free gift In house display to be accurate..As Robin says, press button 9 if its Eons latest smart meter..Older smart meters used by Eon did nt have a keyboard..

I blame the stupid TV advts and the suggestion that a smart meter somehow magically saves you energy.

Cheshirecat - was this "thingymabob" installed by Eon at your request or did you inherit it?
