Smeg washing machine requires new motor after 20 months

Hello

We bought a brand new Smeg washing machine in May 2017. A week ago it failed totally - some water enters and that is it.At the time we bought it we were offered only standard 12m warranty. Smeg aren't interested - only offering me a fully funded repair for £135. I paid this as was desperate and was not in a good place (I found out an hour earlier my mum had died and at the same time our phone/wifi also stopped working).

The sub contracted engineers came today and said it needs a new motor which will take 3/5 days to arrive then they will replace. This means we will have been without for about 10 days - we have 3 kids and both work full time so have been really struggling to get washing done,

Sorry for waffling, my question is under CRA shouldn't motors last longer than 20 months - and can I put anything back on Smeg?

I am v tempted to buy a local recon Bosch - get motor replaced now I've paid and then flog the Smeg - I hate it anyway - if it is unlikely I can get anything from Smeg (ie them paying for repair as a motor should last longer) I would rather just rid - where would be the best place to sell - ebay?

Thanks

    Are Smeg the vendor ??
CRA only applies to the vendor and yes you could have a case . But you would need to prove via an independant report that the motor should have lasted longer.
If Smeg are not the vendor then you have no claim against them .
  • Interesting - thanks - no they were not the vendor Ao.com were and put me onto Smeg as their one year warranty was up. I am just loathe to pay even extra for another engineer to do a report, especially if it will delay even further us getting a working machine.

    Still think I'll get rid though - it's a a horrid machine!

  • Your rights are against AO - you have no rights with Smeg regarding the original purchase, as you didn't buy it from them.
Sorry to hear of your troubles - if you get tough on AO, they should offer a partial refund / free repair (in my experience, usually the latter)

Time is not the only factor, having 3 kids suggest pretty heavy use.

I thought Smeg offered a 2 year guarantee on there machines as standard if you regestered the warranty
  • Thank you Matty, AO have given me a decent amount of cash as goodwill from my email this afternoon, Is never have known it was them til you said. Smeg have let me cancel the call minus £45 for today's call out, so have used that to pay half of a new machine and 5 years after care from John Lewis.

I'd say machine used about 4 times a week so that's moderate rather than heavy use, when kids were little they had cloth nappies so I'd run heavy soil she's twice a day and our much cheaper machine lasted 7 years!

For machines bought from July 2017, we just missed out sadly
