DVLA Tax Refund Backdating

Interesting point Adrain. Not to be cynical but something tells me they'll make sure they don't lose out on that0
-
I imagine they will make sure to only refund the months I've paid for, and not the additional ones that the new owner has put on there.0
-
But you're still the registered keeper, aren't you?0
-
Yes, when I called them, they said that the car was still registered to me. I've just written them to tell them it has been sold.0
-
Then as AdrianC says, you have nothing to worry about. You will be refunded all the months up to the point you ceased to become the registered keeper.0

Last time I traded a car in with a dealer, on the day of the change of car they contacted the DVLA and registered the change of ownership on their computer while I was with them and watching while they did it, they then printed off the DVLA receipt and gave me a copy for my records.
Similarly they then did the tax for my new car at the same time so I could then drive it away.0 -
I'm not sure, I'll see what happens. I don't think this is how they do it because usually:
- A sells the car to B
- B has to tax it straight away with the new keeper slip before driving it (so there is a slight overlap)
- A sends off the log book / informs DVLA
- A then gets his remaining tax refunded, not additionally what B has also paid
The fact they've allowed the overlap period to extend into months also seems broken to me (it's probably to allow for the 6 week delays they've currently got)0 -

You say that you're still the keeper? A car can only have one keeper.0 -
The system is a bizarre mix of posted forms and online processing - the car will only have one keeper but this is out of sync with who taxes it, leading to other weird loopholes like if A sends the log book by post, B can get away with driving without tax for that short period because DVLA won't know about it until they receive the form.
Difficult to say, but you might be right that B's tax is only validated once ownership is transferred to them (as it stands, my letter is only saying I sold to the dealer, so there could be more confusion for the new owner...) Will let you know what happens!0
