For me it was precisely the ability to turn it off and on from a distance. My old thermostat was really difficult to use so changing settings was always a problem. I hated it so wanted to change anyway.

With mine, I have set up a regular daily schedule, depending on what time we are at work or home, so that we don't need to manually switch the heating on or off. Also, if there is nobody home when the heating is generally on, it turns itself off until someone comes back.

I find it useful because i don't have a set pattern of when i will be home and when i will be out so a schedule will be no good to me. The Nest has learnt what temperatures i like and at what times but then if i'm out it won't put the heating on till i'm coming back so is more efficient.

It also integrates with Alexa, Google Assistance and IFTTT which will be useful if you decide to invest in some smart tech.
  • I believe the Nest has the ability to use Geo-fencing as well.

Essentially, you can let it track you. When you get x miles away from home, it will turn the heating off if you're leaving or back on if it sees you coming towards your home.

The nest stuff is pricey. But it's good. I've got the Smoke alarms already and a Thermostat to go with the new boiler. The only thing I wouldn't really bother with is the Doorbell. That is extortion !
