British Gas don't know if they're coming or going!!

Got an appointment booked on Friday to have smart meters installed.

Disappointed to get an email tonight at 10.52pm saying:-

Now that you're our customer, we have been able to find out more about your meters (including the type and location) and unfortunately we can't replace them with our smart meters right now. This is mainly because smart meter technology is not quite ready for your home just yet. We’ll continue to do all we can to get your smart meters installed. We’ve put you on our waiting list and we’ll upgrade your meters as soon as the technology allows us to do so.

But then at 11.09pm, another one arrived:-

An engineer will arrive on 25th January 2019 between 08:00 and 12:00 to install your new smart meters.

Will they come? Should I stay in?

Oh, well obviously technology moved on in those 17 minutes. :)

These things are a law unto themselves. I have no idea if you should stay in.

Its only wednesday so phone them up and ask them
  • Have you by any chance got a 3 phase supply rather than the more normal single phase? I have, and my current elec meter is economy 7 type even though I'm on a single rate tariff. As a result I can't yet have a smart meter as domestic SMETS2 3 phase meters are not yet available!

If they are fitting one, make sure it's SMETS2 so if you switch supplier it'll still be smart, otherwise after a supplier switch it becomes a normal dumb meter!
  • I did a live chat and they said they're coming.

In a new build and both my neighbours have had British Gas smart meters fitted.

They're regular meters. The electric is a new LED digital and the gas an old fashioned type. Apparently, even in new builds they use second hand meters.

After three months the dial on the gas meter was full of moisture and they changed it with another antique.
