Earning under £1000 as Self-Employed

I have been self-employed for many years, whilst also an employee. This year I earned less than £1000 self-employed and seem to have fallen below the threshold of needing to pay tax on this amount. I earned more as an employee and have paid all the tax due. I do not want to cease trading as I am likely to continue working for the coming years. Do I need to let HMRC know that I have earned some money self-employed? I can't see how to do this on the self-assessment.
Many thanks!

  • I think you can tailor the return to include the self employment pages and then claim the trading allowance. Instead of not completing the self employment section.

Thanks for this. I don't have any expenses to claim, so I would it matter if just leave the self-employment section for this year? I am presuming that if I earn more as self-employed in this financial year then I can just fill in the self-employment pages next time. I guess I just want to make sure that my self-employed status doesn't stop!
  • Just add a note to the white space box at the end of the return then. Chances are it won't be read but at least you will have informed HMRC.

You just need to make sure you are still issued with a return or notice to file in April.
