Can you be defaulted twice on your credit file for one debt??

Hi, new to the forum so hope this is in the right place. Back in 2014 I had a Halifax credit card which due to personal circumstances i had to stop paying. The debt went to Moorcroft and ive been paying them monthly for a long time. On my credit file in November 2018 it now says the credit card is settled and is due to drop of in 2020 but im still paying Moorcroft. If i stopped paying Moorcroft could the put a Default on my credit file even though Halifax has recently put the credit card to settled? Im looking to buy a house so don't want any defaults.

Thank you

Well if haifax put is to settled because they sold it on (seems reasonable but maybe not best policy). Then of course moorcraft should add the default themselves. However it would still have the same end date and not be a new default.

If you still owe money then then have siz years after you stop apying/acknowledging to go for a CCJ which will be added to your file regardless of wheather the default has since been removed. What they might do all depends on how much you owe.

Whatever halifax has done it is not an indication that you are free of the debt. Just that they regard that you no longer owe it to them. Or maybe a mistake that will be corrected later.

The debt can only show on your credit file once. If Halifax have sold it to Moorcroft then the Halifax entry should disappear soon and be replaced with a Moorcroft entry.

I have had debts have two entries for a short time where the original lender was slow to update the credit reference agencies (CRAs) and the new owner (the debt collection agency) was quick to update the CRAs. It sorted itself out within a few months though. I did write to the original lender to request they updated the CRAs promptly.

You still owe the debt, but you now owe it to Moorcroft. Halifax has been 'settled' by Moorcroft buying the debt from them. Don't stop paying Moorcroft.

The original default date that Halifax put on your CRA files will be the same date that has to be used by Moorcroft. This default will drop off your credit files 6 years after the default date.

Thanks for your reply. Im not sure how much i owe but i do know ive neen paying it a very long time. Its due to drop off my credit file in 12 months with Halifax and shows as settled with them. So Moorcroft cannot put the default on for another 6 years under there name?

I've been paying Moorcroft years. Halifax only changed it from Default to settled at the end of 2018.
  • Is the default date used by Moorcroft the same date as that originally used Halifax? I believe the dates should match, so as not to impact negatively on your credit file. If the default dates are not identical, then you should raise a written complaint with Moorcroft. :)

There is not actually a default on by Moorcroft. There's actually nothing on it all with them, even to show that im paying them. Only the Halifax which has recently changed to settled. But ive been paying Moorcroft for around 3 years.
  • I believe that Moorcroft should mark the account as defaulted, backdated to the same original default date. This would ensure that the debt is removed from your file at the correct time.

If it were me, I would raise this complaint, in writing, to Moorcroft as I think there is an error.

So just so i understand this, with Halifax its currently settled and due to drop off my credit file in 12 months. If i stop paying Moorcroft they can a default on my credit file but only as the same default end date that the Settled Halifax was at? Either way the debt is off next year?

Moorcroft don’t buy debts, they just manage them, so cannot report to your credit file.

Either you have repaid the debt, or Halifax have sold it to someone else.

Yes as long as you still pay it. Otherwise moorcroft will probably go for a CCJ and make it even worse.

What has probably occured is halfix finally dols the debt to moorcroft rather than were just using them as a debt collector on their behalf.
