Name change on Monarch tickets

A group of my chums are going on a Stag weekend in Barcelona on Friday. One of them has dropped out and has fortunately found someone who is willing to buy the place off him. On the terms & conditions it says that it costs £15 each way to change the name on the tickets.
However when he called Monarch today to change the name on the tickets, they told him that what they would actually do is... cancel his flight, re-sell it to the new person for the current going rate and then charge him a £30 admin fee for the pleasure!!! The going rate is £230 extra!
Is this acceptable??? He can't find confirmation of this anywhere in his terms and conditions. They say it is procedure! I am also bewildered on how they can expect to charge a £30 admin fee when it would be better for him to cancel the flight completely and get his mate to buy the flight directly from Monarch. Does anyone know if this legal?

It seems unfair but I've had experiance of this with another airline....I'm not 100% sure if I'm right....but I've checked Monarchs T & C's and got the following.......
- FARES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE
- CHANGES are allowed up to three hours prior to departure on payment of the applicable fees as well as the fare difference, if the fare at the time of change is higher than the original fare paid.
- FEES per passenger per one-way flight are as follows: flight change GBP10 (EUR16); name change GBP15 (EUR24).
- BAGGAGE allowance per passenger (nil for infants): 5kgs of hand-baggage and 20kgs of hold-baggage.
- EXCESS baggage charges: GBP4 (EUR7) per kilo.
So basically......they will let you have CHANGES before 3 hours to departure if you pay the fee........HOWEVER, the next bit is not so clear!!!!!!
EXAMPLE;
So say 5 of you's booked the flights for £20 each 3 months ago.....
If you book it today its £50 each....
Monarch's T&C ask that you pay the £15 FEE and the new price of the flight......PLUS another £15 to get your pal back....
So whilst four of you's got the flight for £20....the other person will need to pay the £65 to travel....
ITS SH*T I KNOW!0 -
Arrgggh. Thanks for that. It's the pits. I think that looks about right. It confirms what theyhave said anyway. Will pass that info on to him. No Barcelona for him I'm afraid.0

It sounds as though Monarch are attempting to stop touts buying up all the cheap seats as soon as they're released and then selling them on for profit, knowing it'll only cost them £30 to change the name on the booking. Whilst it sounds harsh for your mate, it makes good business sense and stops the rest of us being screwed by unscrupulous operators0

Quick question roughly on the same subject. I booked (on the net) two tickets with Monarch for my wife and myself. Both tickets have come up in my name. Will I be OK with this one? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

When you complete the booking information you would have been asked for all the passengers names. If you have the wrong name on your wifes ticket they may not let you travel. I would suggest you contact them ASAP and get it sorted.
I usually keep screen dumps of all the pages I use for booking so I can check whether it is my error or theirs in situations such as this. Gives a bit of comfort and evidence if you have to argue the toss with them as they are never wrong!!!0 -
Thanks Baz-Bee, I will get intouch ASAP.
