Contents insurance won’t pay out after I was broken into.

  • The claim is still open. They have just denied the DJing equipment. They are still deciding what out of the other things that were stolen are covered.

As soon as that comes back (whenever that might be) then I can get on with the complaints procedure.

Again thanks for all your replies and help on this. I feel much better knowing that I may have a chance on this now.
  • With regards to the question of paying royalties it is my understanding that the venue you play at has to have a public performance license and as long as the DJ pays for the music he uses (buying it from Beatport etc) and doesn’t download it for free then no laws are being broken.

You tell us this issue has "ruined" your life so much so that you feel"suicidal"!

There's no reason not to start the complaints procedure now over this (it's a long business anyway if you end up having to escalate).

Should your claim result in further problems over other aspects then you will be able to raise further complaints as they arise.

But in the meantime stop beating yourself up and get things moving!

I hope you have a good resolution with the insurer. Can't imagine why one payment of £50 would mean £3000 of equipment is classed as business equipment! If you're running a business you're not very good at it...

In the future you might want to consider specialist insurance though. I have it for my acoustic instruments even though I'm also an amateur/hobbyist, it means I don't have to worry about the standard insurance plain not understanding how these things are different to "normal" contents.
  • It’s all pretty basic and anyone with any common sense can see that I don’t run a business with said equipment.

I even said to the woman at the insurance company, “so you’re telling me that if I have a guitar in my house and a friend asked me to play a few songs for him at a party at his house and then gave me a fiver just to say thank you, that the guitar would then be classed as being used for business purposes and not covered under contents insurance?” She said yes that’s right.
    Just made me laugh!

I sometimes use my laptop to sell things on eBay and so by there way of looking at it that would be classed as business use.

I tried explaining all this to the woman on the phone and all she kept saying was, “that is my final decision” over and over again. So very dismissive and rude.

Insurance companies are supposed to there to help you when things go wrong but this company is treating me like a criminal.

Thinking of suing and claiming compensation for mental trauma they have inflicted on me.

Absolutely outrages what they are trying to do.

Another quick note and I have looked through my policy and there are no definitions of what business use even means. Simply says “items used for business use”. What is the definition of business use? The woman on the phone said anything used for any financial gain but that is total crap because it doesn’t say that anywhere in my policy.

    Makes me sick!

It would help to try to reign in the melodrama. Complain to them, calmly, and then if that really is their final decision you can go to the Ombudsman to ask them to intervene.

It seems from what you've told us that your insurance company have got it completely wrong, so you should have some success eventually.

    Good luck.
  • Just to give you all an update. After weeks of noise and stress I have won! Relieved the decision today and they have honoured the entire claim.

I had to jump through more hoops than you find in a bowl of Cheerios but after many headaches and having to prove beyond a doubt I was telling the truth they finally caved.

Feel like a massive weight has been lifted!

Thank you all for your help with this. Don’t think I would have won had it not been for your input.

    Thanks a million!

Excellent news, well done! Glad it worked out in the end, and thanks for letting us know the outcome.
  • Hooray!

I've just joined the forums and read this thread to get a 'feel' of them before starting my own. My tuppence, for what it's worth, is that you still have a good claim for compensation over the way you were treated by the company, particularly initially - they made mistakes that made a bad situation worse for you. If it's really important to you that that is also recognised then keep going, but if it's less important, you might just want to let it go. I'm often asked by concerned friends if I think it's worth the hassle* of all the complaints I make about poor service - to me it is when to them it isn't - you'll have to make your own choice on that.

    Well done!

*It's also not much hassle to me any more, as I've got a routine that works for me.
