Cooker hood carbon filter

I have a cooker hood that is about 18months old. It has 3 metal mesh washable
grease filters on the underside. Once those are removed, the fan is inside and this extracts the air outside - it does not have a recirculate function. I read online (but only one site) that the carbon chips that sit in filters either end of the fan are only necessary if the air is not extracted outside. Also that if, as in my case, the air is extracted outside, unscrewing these carbon filters will make the fan more efficient at taking the air outside.
Anyone know if this is the case? I couldn't see the point in these filters unless they provide a second grease guard to protect the motor.
What's your experience please?

Sounds like my ancient Baumatic chimney hood (15 years old).
It would be worth downloading the installation instructions and user manual for your specific appliance.
IMO sugar soap spray is the quickest/ easiest way to degrease the metal mesh.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Unfortunately it has no make on it and was an ex display from a kitchen shop, so no idea how to find out the make as the kitchen shop is no longer there!
Have cleaned up the mesh panels but it's whether I need to replace the carbon chips inside if it doesn't recirculate but extracts directly outside?0 -
Does the motor sit behind the carbon filter? can you take a photo of it and post it on here for more advice.0

Our Electrolux cooker hood came with carbon filters which were removed as the exhaust was vented outside. As I understand the carbon filters are only used when the cooker hood air is recirculated.0

The answer could well vary with the brand/ product/ expected performance.
AFAIK carbon filters reduce cooking smells, smoke, but can trap grease too. That is part of why they need replacing periodically.
Burger you can't narrow it down to the brands the kitchen shop stocks if they are no more. With an idea of the brand you could e-mail a photo to their Customer Service for guidance.
Definitely no teeny tiny labels hidden inside, even a part number on something? Otherwise maybe post a link to a couple of photos of your hood here, someone could suggest a brand?Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Thanks all, will try to take a picture and upload. The motor is cylindrical like a tin of beans on it's side with a screw on carbon filter each end. Then the whole lot is behind the mesh grease filter. TBH I can't see the carbon filters serve any purpose as the air passes through these and is extracted outside. Unless it's purpose is to filter more grease so it doesn't get into the motor?
Pics to follow I hope!0 -
They are generally only for recirculation except in non domestic kitchens. I would see if the carbon filter comes apart, some do, and replace the carbon with some cooker hood filter foam.0
