Buying Housing Association flat

Hi,

I wondering how the Right to Buy scheme works if you buy your council/Housing Association property and then re-sell within 10 years.

You apparently have to re-pay some of the discount. Does anyone know the mechanism for the repayment?

Many thanks,
S

What does it say in your paperwork?
  • It doesn't say anything in my paperwork other than the fact that I have the Right to Buy, hence why I am asking on here.

    Anyone with any useful info?

Yes. Its 4.50pm, your Housing Association may still be open to call.

If not, I'm sure they open at 9am tomorrow.
  • Dunno if you've heard of google but it's this great tool for finding information: Try it!

  • There are general guidelines but you may find your HA has its own rules as well. You really are best asking your HA about right to buy. We can't advise as reliably as you need.

    Wow. What a friendly bunch!

    Thank you deannatrois.

I couldn't ask the Housing Association because it is for a property that I am swapping with - not my own HA and they will only give this information to current tenants.

I had Googled that link but it doesn't elaborate on the exact mechanism for repayment.

I thought if there are experts in this field on here - someone might be able to shed some light, perhaps not. Even if people can't help, always nice when people aren't obnoxious for no reason. If you don't know the answer to a question - you can always choose to ignore it.

This was my first forum post and will likely be my last.

No one knows what your individual HA rules are. You have to ask them

And asking how you can make money from social housing on this board is like poking a bear...

Be interesting to see how you get the RTB on the swap as you won't have it swapped to you by the previous tenant if its an old rtb.

RtB in its initial format was a benefit awarded to council tenants and honoured by housing associations on stock transfers.

Are you in an area where the new RTB was being trialled?
