Santander balance transfer from Amex screw up

I initiated a couple of balance transfers from 2 of my Amex cards to my new Santander Everyday card last week. I noticed the payments were taking a while to come through and then on Friday, one of them was reversed. I rang Santander and they put it through again.
Because Amex is special and uses 15 (not 16) digit card numbers, their online system can deal with it, so you have to ring them. They request a sort code and account number (from your Amex statement) and card number to use as the reference for the payment.
Today, I rang them and the woman immediately looked at the 3 transfers that were made and each person had screwed them up and put the account numbers and card numbers in the wrong fields! Now they are having to trace the payments. Luckily, as long as it's sorted this week I have time to do the transfers still without incurring interest.
It's incredible that 3 different people can screw that up. So, if you are in the same boat, please ask them to double check all of the details are in the right place!

Just to update this. All 4 transfers I've attempted have failed and have been returned to my credit card account. Santander cannot tell me why, Amex are telling me that they can't see the payments. Stalemate.
If you are looking to do this, please be aware that it might not work.
I'm looking at other options as I have a fee free offer for money transfers with MBNA. Maybe I'll use that as a mule card to get it to Santander (if those balance transfers will work!).0 -
Sorry i am a bit late to the party jpwjpw but was there any update on this? I have just applied and been accepted for a MBNA 0% balance transfer card in the hope I can transfer a balance from my American Express BA credit card... Reading lots of posts on here that have worried me it will not work.
I have phoned MBNA and they said if my balance transfer request I entered online fails, give them a call and they will be able to process it over the phone. I was just wondering if you did try this and if you had any luck?
Thank you!0 -
You need to ask MBNA whether they specially accept BT's from Amex.0
