Old news - the link for the government checker has already been posted on MSE somewhere, sometime in the past week or so.

    This:

Extra months on your passport which bring its validity over 10 years won't count. If you renewed a 10-year adult passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your new passport’s expiry date, making it valid for more than 10 years. But these months WON'T count towards the six months you need left on your passport from your date of arrival.

Makes this make more sense now:
Remember that as MoneySavingExpert first revealed in September, if you renew your passport before it expires, validity from your old passport now won't carry forward onto your new one - so don't renew too far in advance of expiry.
Though I've got a 10+ yr passport now with an expiry date which is potentially not "the" expiry date depending on what I'm using it for and how things pan out.
  • I received a text today advising me to check my passport validity to travel to Europe at https://www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-travel-europe and was surprised to find out that my passport is valid for 6 months shorter in Europe than I thought it was.

Issued in November 2011 my passport had the previous validity period added on, so has an expiry date of April 2022 and I therefore thought that it would be valid to travel to 6 months prior to the expiry date,  the government advice on https://www.gov.uk/visit-europe-1-january-2021 states "

On the day you travel, you’ll need your passport to both:

    • have at least 6 months left
    • be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left)"
The passport checker at https://www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-travel-europe advised me that I wouldn't be able to travel to Europe after May 2021.   What's caught me is the last paragraph of the linked news article, that the extra months of validity added to my passport don't count to the 'must have 6 months validity left'.   I phoned HMPO to check the results and they confirmed that the passport checker information is correct but didn't seem to understand that they needed to make the text on the gov.uk website clearer as to the new rules.

    Grr.

I'd be happier on holiday in Brittany than being at work !
