Switching supplier smart meter question

Hi,

I am looking at switching from BG as they are not the cheapest anymore for me and my tariff contract is now up. I have just tried to do this via a comparison site switching to Lumo I think it was and they said they can’t because I already have a smart meter, even though the contract states that I have to have one installed within 6 months of starting anyway, so either way I would have to have theirs installed.

My question is this, do I go through with the process but state I DO NOT have a smart meter, as it will revert to a dumb meter once I switch, or do I have to still have to declare I have a smart meter, even though it won’t work as one, and therefore would be unable to switch to this company?

Thanks

    Best to be truthful.

If it asks if you currently have a smart meter, and you do currently have a smart meter, fess up! :)

(It's not your problem if it stops working in smart mode after the switch happens)

They will see from the meter database what kind of meter you have, so you still wouldn't get very far. Pick another supplier. Make sure you're using a comparison site that gives you a whole market comparison.

Thanks for the replies, just wasn’t sure. So basically this company will only accept new customers who have never had a smart meter fitted? Doesn’t seem a great business move but hey ho, up to them.

I went to LUMO through the topcashback app, only to have lumo DECLINE my £50 cashback with no explanation. Now I am tied in for the next 10 months - won't be staying.

That sadly would be a reflection on the cashbacksite, rather than the supplier

TCB have gained quite a reputation for failing to pay cashback for a whole variety of suppliers, not just energy

That simply isn't true. If you don't get paid it's because the cashback site haven't been paid, they have nothing to gain from purchases that don't track or are declined. They want the cashback to be paid just as much as you do since that's how they make money, but there's little they can do if the supplier (or more likely middleman) says no.
