Very high gas bill in new home

Just received my gas bill and it seems extortionately high. Spoke to neighbours with similar size house, windows, insulation etc... and appears to be 3x as high. House only uses gas for central heating / hot water and gas hob. Where do I even begin to work out why this is happening?

Is your boiler comparable to what your neighbours have? Would you have an older boiler, compared to your neighbours?
When you first moved in, did you give an accurate opening meter reading to your gas supplier? Or are they using an ESTIMATED opening reading, and is the closing reading Estimated or one you provided??
Is your meter Imperial or Metric? The 3x as high as neighbours could be that you have a Metric meter, but your gas company is converting the units as Imperial (which would have a roughly 3x as high KW figure).
If you are not aware, unlike electricity meter, which shows you KW used, your gas meter is showing UNITS used, and needs to be converted to KW. The calculations used are different if your meter is Imperial and if it is Metric.
There are two types of gas meters; the older style imperial meters and the more modern metric meters. If the meter shows a 'ft3,' then it's imperial and measures in cubic feet. If the meter shows 'm3,' then it's metric and measures in cubic meters.
The other main thing to consider is, do you leave your heat on all day? Your neighbours may only have the boiler on a few hours a day in comparison.
Once you reply to the above, myself or others may be able to offer other possibilities.0 -
In addition to the good advice above - make a note of the meter serial number and compare it to that on your bill.
Most unexpected high bills end up as meter reading issues - lack of meter readings.
Is your meter Smart - as installed by your supplier at your request or did you inherit it.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
