Using own gas meter

As others have pointed out, the Standing Charge pays for a lot more than just the meter
I live in rural Essex with electricity supplied by overhead cables, last Summer the distributor replaced the main cable and the connections to every house
However, I still have a problem with the Daily Standing Charge.
Given that it is reasonable for there to be deals available with Zero or a low Standing Charge for low consumers, I cannot understand the SC disparities in tariffs offered to other users
Whatever supplier you choose, your areas infrastructure for which you pay the Daily Standing Charge is exactly the same, with the same costs.
Yet the DS charge not only varies wildly from supplier to supplier, but can also vary within the tariffs offered by one supplier.
I'm certainly in favour of contributing to the cost of the Gas & Elec grids, but object to part of that cost being a camouflaged hike in the suppliers margins.0 -

The standing charge and the price you pay per unit all goes into the same pot of money used by the energy companies to pay for everything. The standing charge certainly doesn't represent the cost of maintaining the grids. The amount of the SC and price per unit is set depending on what type of users they want to market the tariff too.0
